CHAG’s History

The Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) is a network organization of 390 Christian Faith-Based health facilities and health training institutions owned by 32 different church denominations in Ghana. CHAG provides healthcare to the most vulnerable and underprivileged population groups in all the 16 administrative regions of Ghana especially in remote areas where the government has limited or no health facilities at all. Every year, nearly 8 million Ghanaians in different parts of the country, benefit from the services of CHAG.

CHAG’s core mandate is to promote the Healing Ministry of Jesus Christ and be a reliable partner in the health sector. CHAG aims to provide holistic health services and training, focusing on the marginalized, poor, under-served, unserved, and the unreached populations in remote parts of Ghana.

Starting as a small network of facilities set up by missionaries in remote areas, today, CHAG has expanded in numbers and scope with some of the rural areas now becoming urban poor and peri-urban areas. Starting primarily with basic care that was once taken to the doorstep of communities through Primary Health Care system approach and dispensaries, the CHAG network now provides all range of health services including curative, rehabilitative, preventive, health promotion and palliative care. In recent times, some CHAG facilities have grown to secondary level status and are providing high-end and highly skilled services and diagnostics including renal transplant, orthopedic care, eye care, renal dialysis, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services, Computer Tomography (CT) scans and others. With barely 7.5% of Ghana’s health infrastructure, CHAG delivers about 20-28% of health services at the outpatient department (OPD) level.

Given the unique catchment and scope of services provided by CHAG, the government of Ghana has partnership arrangement with CHAG in providing health care in Ghana.  Hence, CHAG works closely with the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and advocates for improvements in the health sector.

The Founding members of CHAG were the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference and the Christian Council of Ghana. The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) was later admitted into membership as an Ordinary Member with all other denominations not belonging to these three groups being admitted as Associate Members.

Formed initially as a voluntary organization, the association began with 25 members in 1967 which has now grown to 390 members. It is now the largest non-state actor in health and the second largest provider of health services in Ghana.
